Finding a good skin cleanser can be difficult. For me, it can be too strong and strip my skin of moisture. It can be so ineffective that I don’t feel my skin is clean at all. I’ve been using the Shiseido Senka Perfect Whip Beauty Face Foam as my cleanser of choice recently and have been collecting thoughts for almost two weeks.

The Perfect Whip Beauty Face Foam is a Japanese Beauty foaming cleanser and a viral cult favorite. During my testing, what I’ve been paying attention to is how this face wash performs at cleansing skin, whether it's too stripping for everyday use, and whether it is worth its cult-favorite status.

This review will cover formula, texture, overall performance, pros/cons, and a final verdict on whether it’s worth spending money on.

What is the Shiseido Perfect Whip Beauty Face Foam?

This face wash comes in the standard squeeze tube. It’s sleek, minimal, and blue. The tube is a good size for travel as well. It can fit easily into a bag without taking up a lot of room. The flip-top cap makes it easy to dispense. The flip-top cap feels sturdy as well so I don’t think it’ll rip off with day and and day out usage.

At under $10 for 120 g, it’s an amazingly good deal. A little goes a long way. A tiny pea-sized amount per wash is a good enough amount. This means that this cleanser will last a good long time without needing to purchase a new cleanser.

While the ingredients list does include fragrance, I don’t personally smell any when I’m using it. Fragrance is listed as the last ingredient, which means that it contains the least amount in terms of ingredients.

What are the Ingredients in the Perfect Whip Beauty Face Foam?

One of the more interesting ingredients of the Shiseido Senka Perfect Whip Beauty Face Foam is sericin and hydrolyzed silk. Sericin is a natural silk bioactive extract produced by the silkworm Bombyx mori. It helps prevent water loss and irritation, leaving a smooth, silky feeling on the skin. Hydrolyzed silk is a similar natural protein fiber consisting of fibroin and sericin. It similarly provides hydration and leaves the skin feeling silky and smooth. That’s the first feeling you’ll get when you use this product. It feels silky and slippery without feeling greasy.

This cleanser also contains two types of hyaluronic acid, sodium acetylated hyaluronate and sodium hyaluronate, to lock in surface moisture and maintain hydration. Together, these two sets of ingredients aim to bring nourishing hydration to the skin instead of stripping it and drying it out.

This face wash is also formulated with Shiseido’s proprietary Aqua-in-Pool ingredient to help retain moisture, but I have not found any resources that explain what this ingredient is or how it was created.

It’s worth noting that this original formulation, the blue bottle, has a pH level of 8.0. This high alkalinity might be drying or stressful for the skin if you have very dry skin or very sensitive skin. If your skin has a very specific need, you might benefit from the specialized versions of the Senka Perfect Whip foam, like the Collagen-In version, Acne Care version, or the White Clay version.

What is the Texture of the Perfect Whip Beauty Face Foam and How Does It Feel?

When you squeeze out of the tube, you’ll get a rich, creamy product in a pearly white color. When you lather, it turns into a luxurious, slippery consistency. It doesn’t foam up into large clouds like other cleansers, but the lather and the bubbles are thin and dense. The brand calls this “micro-dense” foam when mixed with water.

Because this cleanser is made with sericin and hydrolyzed silk, it glides over the skin and washes without pulling or tugging on the skin. Similarly, I found that it didn’t leave the skin feeling tight and uncomfortable when it was washed off.

How Does it Perform and Feel on the Skin?

I found that this face wash was excellent at removing the daily sebum, sweat, and dirt you’ll likely encounter. It also removed any light makeup residue I had on my skin. The slight caveat is that I double cleanse. I use an oil cleanser first to soften and lift makeup off my skin and then use a foaming cleanser. Following that method, the Senka Perfect Whip Beauty Face Foam does a great job of removing makeup.

I tried using the face foam alone without an oil cleanser to remove makeup and, while it was great at lifting and washing off most creamy products (lip products, blush, foundation, etc.), it had some trouble with gel eyeliners and mascara, especially the kind formulated to be incredibly long-lasting. In that case, I will recommend double cleansing because just the face wash won’t be enough.

After washing, it leaves the skin feeling squeaky-clean and refreshed but without the feeling of tightness and dryness that is usually associated with cleansers that provide that deep cleansing power. It feels very comfortable on the skin.

However, I would also say that your mileage on this will vary depending on your skin type. I have oil/combination skin; this cleanser played very well with my skin type and left it feeling refreshed. If you have especially dry or sensitive skin, this might stress your skin out or leave it feeling tight and uncomfortable. If you are going to try this with a dry skin type, you’ll need to immediately follow up with a pH-balanced toner and subsequent skincare steps to bring your skin’s pH level back to baseline. This cleanser contains fragrance in very small amounts. If you have sensitive skin and are particularly sensitive to fragrance, please start out with a patch test before using it all over your skin.

What are the Pros and Cons of the Shiseido Perfect Whip Beauty Face Foam

  • Pros:

    • Exceptional value for money (lasts for months).

    • Deeply cleanses and clears skin without harsh scrubbing or tugging.

    • Infused with hydrating silk essence and hyaluronic acid that helps keep skin moisturized.

  • Cons:

    • Contains added fragrance and cleansing alcohols, which may not suit ultra-sensitive, dry skin types.

    • It’s a higher pH level of 8. It might feel stripping or drying to sensitive skin types as well.

    • It doesn’t 100% remove all makeup on its own. It needs to be a part of a double cleanse routine to wash makeup off.

Is the Shiseido Perfect Whip Beauty Face Foam Worth the Money?

I can see why this is a cult classic in Japan. It feels great on the skin. It is refreshing and cleans without pulling on the skin too much. It cleans without leaving the skin feeling dry and tight. At the $10 price point and because a little goes a long way, this is a great value for your money. If you agree with the formulation, you’ll be able to use this for a long time. I know I’ll be able to.

It is probably best for oily or combination skin types. Dry or sensitive skin types should pay a bit of attention to the fragrance and the pH level of 8. I’d recommend patch testing before using on your whole face.

Final Rating: 4.5/5 (minus points for high pH level and fragrance)

Have you tried the Shiseido Senka Perfect Whip Beauty Face Foam? How did it work for you? I have heard a lot about Japanese beauty. I want to explore more of their products, especially if they perform at a similar quality as this face wash.
